Good Comms.

And that was it. Overnight we all became remote.

The world of communications was going to change forever.

It was jarring. It still is. But in times of crisis, comes adaptation, innovation and creativity.

In less than 24 hours, zoom was suddenly the number one tool for businesses.

When your own mother who works in Employment Law calls you up and asks how to set up a camera for a meeting, that’s when you know the world has realised that video is no longer a trend it’s a necessity.

Everyone is now in front of the camera. Sharing, connecting and streaming. Words and moments are now being captured through a screen. Some are embracing it, others shy away. But during this time of the ‘new normal” we have to stay connected and this means using the camera.

Never did I think I would start this blog in the midst of a pandemic. The fact that I’m even using “Pandemic” in a sentence is unnerving but we take what is laid before us and we continue to grow, learn and succeed. And most importantly remain connected with the tools and resources that we have.

So welcome to “Good Comms” This is a series of thoughts on how to communicate clearly, profoundly and empathically in our new world. Are you an Entrepreneur? Consultant? CEO or leader of a team who you now manage remotely?

Then this is for you. Tips, tricks and an insider’s take on the world of being in front of the camera.

I want your brand to continue on. I want your messages to be heard. I want you and your team to win. And to do that you need to understand the value of “Good Comms”

So what does that mean?

I’m already seeing monumental shifts and changes in the way we communicate. People are hungry for content. People want conversation and they need something to be engaged with and something to stream. But the conversation needs to be right, otherwise people will quickly skip, swipe or turn off from what you have to say if you have no “On Camera Presence”

So how do you get that?

It’s a loaded question that I will be breaking down during this series but let me start off with this important message; You need to accept that we are not going to go back to the old way of communicating. Those that can master remote working, the value of video calls and zoom meetings will realise it makes no sense to go back to how we used to do things. More can be achieved over video. So we have to accept we are all going to be in front of the camera and we need to be the best version of ourselves when we do this.

Next week's post will share how you can look and feel good in front of camera for your next zoom session.

Until then, join me every Tuesday for a live interactive show on Instagram @lucyjnorris where you can ask me anything about the world of communicating in the digital era.

Stay Safe. Stay Healthy. Stay Connected.

Lucy

This definitely hit home for me. Yesterday, I had my first virtual class for a course I am doing, and there was an initial struggle using the webcam. But that's when I realised this is now a new normal.

I always thought that having "on camera presence" was a bonus - something that makes someone stand out from the rest. But then I listened to a podcast yesterday, where someone said they may stop coffee meetings when the pandemic is over and switch to zoom, that's when I thought maybe this is a new reality.

Being comfortable on camera is now as integral to composing a Press Release or managing social media. Like Lucy says, we need to accept we…
